Your guide to Sweden’s biggest student city
Student PUB GUIDE
Stockholm is full of bars and nightlife, but it’s rarely very friendly to a student budget. That’s why student pubs hold a special place in students’ hearts – you get both food and drink at a low price and a guaranteed chance to meet other students, even from different programs.
Student pubs are run by event committees on a non-profit basis, by students for students.
Many student pubs like to jazz things up in true student fashion and sell patches you can attach to your overalls or tailcoat, if you have one. Outside KTH, it’s relatively rare to own such a garment unless you’re a member of an event committee / club master’s committee (Klubbmästeri - KM/QM) yourself, but you can still have fun at the student pub!
Ovve GUIDE
With roots stretching back to the 1960s student orchestras and engineering traditions, the ovve (boiler suit) has grown into a vibrant symbol of community, creativity, and pride. Today, it’s worn by students across Sweden, and of course, right here in the capital.
The ovve represents your identity as a student, which programme you’re part of and it tells the story about you and your time in higher education. The color shows where you belong, the patches tell your story, and every rip or stain speaks of a memory worth keeping. Whether you're an engineer, a communication student, or a cultural studies enthusiast – there's an ovve for you, and a tradition waiting to be discovered.
Sash Ribbon Guide
In the world of student traditions, sash ribbons (frackband) are an essential part of formal attire at events like balls, banquets, and ceremonial gatherings. Worn with tailcoats or formal dress, they bring a sense of elegance and occasion to every celebration.
Each ribbon represents a connection – to a student union, section, faculty association, subject group, or special-interest society. They can also signal that you've held a position of responsibility or made a meaningful contribution to student life.
